Silvia Canetto

Canetto researches diversity issues in suicidal behaviors and hastened death, aging and end-of-life, as well as cultural norms, stereotypes and narratives of men’s and women’s interest, persistence and success in STEM fields.

Canetto is a Fellow for the American Psychological Association, and is affiliated with several other professional organizations, including the International Association for Suicide Prevention and the Association of Women in Psychology.

Canetto has received several awards for her work, including the Margaret B. Hazaleus Award in 2006, the Association of Women in Psychology LUMA Award in 2007, and the Society for the Psychology of Women Stickland Henderson-Daniel Distinguished Mentoring Award in 2010.

Canetto received her Doctor of Psychology in experimental and physiological psychology from the University of Padova in Italy in 1977. She earned her M.A. in general psychology from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1983 and her Ph.D. in older adult psychology from Northwestern University in 1987.
