Carolan is a professor of sociology and co-director of the Food Systems Institute.

Carolan’s areas of expertise include environmental and agricultural law and policy, environmental sociology, the sociology of food systems and agriculture, and the sociology of technology and scientific knowledge. He also dabbles in social theory.

A prolific author, he has published over 250 peer review articles and chapters as well as several books. He holds appointments at colleges and universities around the world.

In addition to articles and books, Carolan regularly writes pieces for public audiences as he works to bridge the town-gown divide, and routinely makes national and international radio and television appearances.

Carolan holds a Ph.D. in sociology from Iowa State University.
