Anne Cleary

Cleary explores human memory; specifically, people’s ability to show memory when they experience retrieval failure. Among her research interests are déjà vu, familiarity, tip-of-the-tongue experiences and the science of learning.

From 2013 to 2015, Cleary served as program director for the Perception, Action and Cognition Program in the NSF Division of Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences. In 2019, she co-authored “A Guide to Effective Studying and Learning,” published by Oxford University Press, with department colleagues Matthew Rhodes and Edward DeLosh.

Cleary is a Fellow of both the Association for Psychological Science and the American Psychological Association where she is a past president of its Division 3 (Society for Experimental Psychology and Cognitive Science). She is also a member of the Columbine Health Systems Center for Healthy Againg at CSU.

Cleary received her B.S. in psychology from John Carroll University in 1997. She then studied cognitive psychology at Case Western Reserve University, earning her M.A. in 1999 and her Ph.D. in 2001.
